ASCENT, TAKING THE TRAIL LESS TRAVELED, AKA THE “EMERGENCY ROUTE”

Mt. harvey trailThe route we used to ascend Mount Harvey, considered to be a “secondary route”, was well “brushed” in for good stretches and no doubt a little challenging at times. It is definitely the route less traveled and the trail isn’t as well marked as you would like. It may also be worth mentioning that the secondary route is an emergency route and a map and experience is a definite consideration.

Despite all this, this route up to Harvey Peak was great way to see the backside of the Lions and it  gave us a great overview of Magnesia Meadows. The trail brought us directly south of Mt. Brunswick to Magnesia Meadows and the ascent to Mount Harvey Summit was via the east side of the peak. This ascent up the east side of Harvey Peak was a bit of a scramble, but the challenge was fun and inviting.

The views at the top of Harvey were breathtaking and rewarding. After soaking it all in, we descended the mountain, via “The Harvey Trail” and realized how steep a climb it would have been and how equally difficult it was to descend.  The “Ridge Trail” as it also known as is well marked and well used.

Overall Mount Harvey is classified a difficult hike and I wouldn’t argue that, but being up there and having that experience is what makes it fun and so worth the effort.

Can’t wait to go back!
